Realized I was watering my lawn ALL wrong for 3 years straight

I used to just set the sprinkler on a timer and walk away, but after that dry July I finally checked my soil and it was like concrete beneath the top inch. Now I do deep watering twice a week instead of light daily sprinkles, and my grass actually stays green through August. Anyone else around here switch up their watering routine after a bad season?

Three years? Seems like the grass lived fine until one bad July. People act like they discovered fire with deep watering. I do the same lazy sprinkler timer thing. Clay soil here. Grass is fine. Maybe a little brown in August but it bounces back. Seems like overthinking it to me. Grass is tough. It survives.

Haha yeah I'm definitely in the 'lazy sprinkler timer' club too. My grass looks like crap by August but it's not dead, just ugly. I figure if I can survive on cheap coffee and bad decisions, grass can survive a little neglect. At this point I'm pretty sure my lawn is held together by spite and whatever weed seeds blow in from the neighbors yard. Deep watering sounds nice but I've got better things to do than stand there with a hose for an hour. Like watch my grass turn brown from the comfort of my couch.
