Finally figured out why my tomato plants kept dying on the patio

I've been growing tomatoes out back for like 7 summers now, always in those big plastic pots from Home Depot, and every year they'd start strong then just wilt by August. Last week my neighbor Larry, who gardens like a maniac, saw my setup and asked if I was watering from the top. I said yeah, daily, and he just shook his head. Turns out the soil was getting packed down and the roots were drowning in a soggy top layer while the bottom stayed bone dry. I switched to a saucer underneath and started bottom watering, plus poked some holes in the sides of the pots with a screwdriver. It's only been 10 days but the leaves are already greener and perkier than any season I can remember. Has anyone else here dealt with container tomatoes acting up on the westshore, or is it just my patch of bad luck?
