I thought those chimney inspection cameras were just a gimmick until last month
A homeowner in Springfield insisted I use one on their old flue, and it showed a crack the rods missed. Now I'm debating if the $800 price is worth it for every job or just the tricky ones. What's your take on camera use versus traditional methods?

Get the camera, seriously. I held out for years thinking my rods and mirror were good enough. Found a huge gap in a liner last fall that we would have totally missed, saved us from a nasty callback. It pays for itself on just one or two jobs where you catch a hidden problem. I use mine on any flue over twenty years old now, no question. The cheap peace of mind for the customer is worth way more than the time you save guessing.

Camera caught a bird nest I'd have missed.

Yeah, it's a great tool, but it doesn't replace a physical check. You still gotta get your hands in there to feel for weak spots or cracks the camera can't show. The best method uses both.
