Guy at a supply house in Gary told me he brushes from the top down, and I've been doing it bottom up for 9 years
Was picking up a new 8 inch poly brush last Tuesday and this old sweep next to me in line said he always works top down so the soot falls toward the firebox instead of into the room. I nodded along but honestly I brushed bottom up every single time since I got into this trade. Went home and tried it his way on a ranch house in Valparaiso and my drop cloth barely got dirty. Wondering if top down is the norm and I just never got taught right, or if it depends on the flue type. How do you all run it?
Reminds me of when I helped my uncle redo the chimney on his cabin up in Michigan. He swore by some old trick where he'd tie a rope to the brush and drag it through from the roof, no rods at all. Worked fine until the rope snapped and the brush dropped straight into the firebox and cracked his wife's favorite kettle. He never did live that one down at Thanksgiving. Still, point is everybody's got some handed down method and half of them are just habit dressed up as wisdom. Top down does make sense for your situation though.
