My uncle called Toucan Sam a rip-off of Cornelius and now I can't look at Froot Loops the same

My uncle Stan worked at a grocery store in Omaha for 22 years and last weekend he claimed Kellogg's flat out copied the whole bird-with-a-weird-nose thing from an old 1950s mascot nobody remembers. He couldn't give me a name or a year off the top of his head, just kept saying "look it up, it's all there," which is not how proof works. Did anyone else ever hear this rumor, or is my uncle just messing with me at family dinners again?
