Update: my $12 speed square fix for wonky stair stringers worked better than the $200 jig
Everyone on the crew kept telling me to buy the fancy aluminum jig for cutting stringers, but I cut 14 steps on a deck job in Boise using just my old speed square and a sharp pencil. I clamped a 2x4 fence to the top plate so the square could not slip, then marked rise and run right off the framing square. The inspector walked the stairs and did not flag a single tread, so I am wondering if anyone else skipped the jig and just fenced their square.
This is the same thing I see everywhere, guys spend money on gadgets when the old school way already works fine. My grandpa framed houses for 40 years with nothing but a square, a pencil, and a chalk line, and those houses are still standing. The clamp on the 2x4 is the whole trick, keeps the square from creeping on you halfway through the cut. Fancy jigs are handy for repeat work but they are not magic, the layout is still on you.
