TIL you're supposed to pre-drill trim nails near the ends, after 12 split pieces in one day
Last Tuesday I was nailing up shoe mold in a 1920s house downtown and cracked the ends off four pieces in a row, and just figured the old pine was junk. An older guy on the crew (been trimming 30+ years) walked over and asked if I was pre-drilling. I said no, why would I, 15 gauge finish nails are tiny. He had me try one with a 1/16 bit first, and that piece went up clean, no crack, nothing. Turns out when you nail within an inch or so of the end, the nail acts like a wedge and splits the grain right along the board. Since then I keep a small cordless and a 1/16 bit on my belt, and my waste pile on that job dropped to almost nothing. Anyone else learn this the hard way, or was it just me?
