Saw a crew in Portland hand-cutting dovetails with a $12 garage sale saw

Was walking through the Pearl District last month and stopped to watch a guy building a bench on site, and he was cutting dovetails with a beat up old Disston he paid $12 for at a garage sale. He said he sharpens it every 3 weeks and it beats his $200 Japanese saw for softwood. Anyone else still reach for the cheap old saws over the fancy stuff?
