Realized I was using my block plane all wrong for like 2 years

I was at my buddy's shop in Detroit last month helping him with some custom cabinets and he watched me try to plane a edge. He just laughed and showed me I was pushing it sideways instead of with the grain the whole time. No wonder I was getting tearout on pine boards every single time. Has anyone else had that moment where an old habit made you feel stupid in front of another carpenter?

Man, that's exactly the kind of thing that makes you want to kick yourself. I spent a whole summer fighting with my hand plane on a bunch of oak boards before a old timer at the lumberyard pointed out I was holding it wrong the whole time. Feels like we all have to learn the hard way on some basic stuff.

Feel you on that one. There's nothing like having a pro casually point out you've been doing something basic wrong for years.
