Pro tip: I tracked 40 miter cuts before I realized my saw was off by a degree
I keep a notebook in the shop and started marking down every miter cut I made for a week. After 40 cuts I noticed something ugly, they were all drifting about 1 degree off. Turns out the detent plate on my old Craftsman miter saw had worn loose in one spot and I just never checked it. I was blaming my own hands for weeks on trim work that kept showing gaps at the corners. Has anyone else had a detent go loose on an older saw, and did you replace the plate or just work around it with a speed square?
That detent plate wear thing is real, I had the same drift on my old Hitachi and it was the plate not my hands. If you replace it, check the whole table for slop too because a worn detent usually means the pivot bolt is loose as well.
