Old timer at a job site in Boise told me to stop sanding pine with 220, and it took me 2 years to get why
I was trimming out a small rental in Boise about 6 years back and an older finish carpenter named Walt was working the unit next door. I was running 220 grit over some pine casings to get them smooth before paint, and he walked over, ran his thumb down one piece, and said the wood felt dead. He told me to drop to 150 and stop trying to make pine feel like maple, since the paint needs something to bite into anyway. I switched grits that afternoon and the primer actually soaked in like it should. Has anyone else had an old timer change how you think about grit, or am I the only one who was over-sanding for years?
