Can we talk about the time a knot in a 2x10 nearly cost me a deck in Tacoma?
I was framing a 12x16 deck last month in Tacoma and had just set a rim joist when I heard a pop that didn't sound right. Got up close and saw a big knot had opened up right at my lag bolt, splitting the wood about 4 inches along the grain. I pulled the whole piece back out, cut 18 inches off the end past the knot, and rehung it with the bolt moved 6 inches away from the defect. Cost me an hour and a half and a chunk of lumber but that joist could have let go under a hot tub load. Now I run my hand down every board looking for knots near where I'm drilling, does anyone else check grain direction before they pick bolt spots?
