A simple trick I saw at a job site in Portland changed how I set up my miter saw

I was helping a friend frame a garage up there last month, and his lead guy, Mark, had his saw on a low bench with a 2x4 screwed to the front. He used that board as a stop block for every cut, but he also had a small piece of 1/4 inch plywood nailed to it as a spacer. He said it keeps the cut piece from getting pinched between the blade and the stop, and it really does make the pieces drop clean every time. Has anyone else tried a setup like this, or do you have a different trick for repeat cuts?

Oh that's a smart fix. I read a tip about using a spacer like that to stop tear-out. Honestly, it just makes sense to keep things from binding up.

That's interesting, but I've always just used a scrap of cardboard for a spacer. Seems like plywood would be overkill for the same job.
