A guy in a Tacoma lumberyard told me to always sharpen my own chisels

This was maybe 15 years ago in Eugene, I was buying a new set and he saw me looking at the display. He said, 'If you learn to put the edge on it yourself, you'll never blame the tool again.' I was young and just wanted something ready to go. He was right, though. Now I spend 20 minutes at the grinder before any fine joinery. Anyone else have a piece of advice that seemed simple but stuck with you for good?

He was right, but man, what a buzzkill.

Ugh, tell me about it. I've learned the hard way that sometimes you just gotta let people have their fun, even if you see the train wreck coming. Pointing it out in the moment never helps, it just makes you the enemy. Save the "I told you so" for later when they're cleaning up the mess.
