Question about switching careers after a project failure

I tried to launch a new side project at work last quarter and it totally bombed. The software rollout was supposed to save us 40 hours a month but instead it broke our client database for two days. My boss pulled me aside and said maybe I should stick to what I know. Now I am thinking about leaving my IT job to try something totally different like sales or trades. Has anyone here made a big career shift after a big screw up at work? How did you decide what to do next?

One failed project doesn't mean your whole career is over, that's a pretty extreme jump. Everybody has something go wrong at work, it's part of learning how things actually work in the real world. Maybe just take a breath and figure out what went wrong before you toss your whole IT background out the window over one bad quarter.

Haha oh man, tell me about it. I once spent three months coding a feature that turned out to be exactly what the client didn't want. Like, I literally built the wrong thing from scratch. Felt like throwing my whole dev career in the trash over one dumb mistake. But you're right, stuff like that is just part of the job. Probably better to learn from it than cry over it, right?
