My first salary negotiation in Chicago taught me to ask for 15% more

Back in 2019 I took a job offer at a marketing firm near the Loop without haggling. Three months later I found out the guy two desks over had the same title and made $8,000 more. I pulled together a list of my extra duties and asked for a raise, got 15% bumped after two meetings. Has anyone else walked into a negotiation cold and learned the hard way that silence loses money?
