I thought networking was a scam until a random guy at a coffee shop got me a job interview
For 3 years I avoided every networking event because it felt fake and pushy. Then last spring I was complaining about my job search to a stranger at a Starbucks in Denver. He turned out to be a hiring manager at a company I'd applied to twice before. We talked for 20 minutes about regular stuff and he handed me his card. I got called for an interview the next week and landed the position. Has anyone else stumbled into a job lead through a totally random conversation?

Yeah that checks out honestly. I've noticed the best stuff comes from just being around people in normal situations not forced ones. Networking events are like speed dating for jobs everyone's putting on an act and nobody relaxes enough to actually help anybody. But when you're just shooting the breeze about nothing important people drop their guard and show who they really are. That's when real connections happen. It's the same reason I've gotten more business shaking hands at a barbeque than at any chamber of commerce meeting. The world runs on casual conversations not planned pitches.
