Rant: People keep using those cheap plastic tent stakes in rocky soil

I was at a campsite in Moab last spring and watched three different groups snap their stakes trying to hammer them into packed gravel. If you're camping anywhere with actual rocks, just spend the $15 on some MSR Groundhogs and save yourself the headache. Why do folks keep buying those garbage stakes?

I saw a guy in Colorado bend three titanium stakes in a row on the same rocky spot. He was literally using a rock as a hammer. Maybe the real issue is nobody reads the soil type on the package before buying.

Read the package, sure, but people just see "titanium" and think it's unbreakable. They don't stop to think the ground wins every time if you're not matching the tool to the dirt. I see this everywhere now, not just with camping gear. Folks buy the most expensive, toughest thing they can find and then get surprised when it fails because they never looked at the actual job it needed to do. Kinda like people buying a truck to commute and then wondering why gas is killing them. The fancy label just lets them skip the thinking part.
