Watch out for the guy selling 'fresh' light seal foam at the Columbus camera show
I buy most of my foam from the same supplier in Ohio, but last Saturday at the Columbus show a vendor sold me a sheet that crumbled into dust the second I touched it to a Canon FTb. I lost $40 and a customer's camera sat on my bench an extra 4 days while I waited for a real sheet to show up. The vendor's table was near the front door, second row in, and he had a handwritten sign that just read "JAPAN FOAM." What got me was when I pressed a scrap between my fingers and it fell apart, he shrugged and said "that's how you know it's old stock, that's the good stuff." So now I test every sheet on the spot before I pay, and I bring a small sealed jar so I can watch how it reacts to air. Has anyone else run into this guy, and is there a reliable source for seal foam that won't turn to powder in a drawer?
