My surge protector shelf collapsed twice in one week and I finally fixed it

Last Tuesday I came home to find my surge protector dangling off the underside of my desk, all six cables pulling at it like a weird tentacle mess. The velcro strips I had been using just gave up after 4 months of holding a heavy brick of plugs. I re-did it with zip ties through the mounting holes, but the shelf itself was too thin and snapped by Friday. Ended up screwing a small metal shelf bracket from Lowe's into the desk frame for $7, and now everything sits level. Anyone else had a setup fail because the mounting point was weaker than the cables?
