A homeowner in Denver set me straight on drilling through fire blocks

I used to just fish rods blindly and poke wherever the wall felt hollow. Last March a customer watched me start to drill above his outlet and stopped me, said check the stud bay with a magnet first. He showed me his old place had a nail plate I would have hit dead center. Now I spend that extra minute with my $12 stud finder and a rare earth magnet on every interior wall job. Has anyone else had a homeowner catch something their training missed?
