Old cabinetmaker told me to never sand MDF with anything finer than 120 grit

I spent three hours sanding a set of cabinet doors down to 220 grit for a kitchen in Portland last year, and when I went to spray the primer, it just sat on top and fisheyed like crazy, has anyone else had adhesion issues with MDF that was sanded too smooth?

Learned that lesson the hard way myself, sanded some MDF shelving down to 320 grit and the paint beaded up like water on a freshly waxed car. Ended up having to rough it all back up with 120 grit just to get the primer to grab hold. Makes you wonder why we put in all that extra elbow grease just to shoot ourselves in the foot, right?

Honestly I think part of it is we get so focused on making it look smooth we forget the paint needs something to grip, almost like we're polishing it for no reason instead of prepping it for what comes next.
