How my approach to sanding has changed over the years
Back then, I hurried through sanding and it showed. Now I go slow and the finish is so much smoother! That care made a big difference on my recent bookshelf.

Totally get what you mean about going slow now. My buddy Sam rushed the sanding on a pine table and you could still see every scratch under the stain. He had to strip it all back. Last month he spent a whole afternoon just on the sanding for a simple stool, and the paint went on like glass. He said it was boring but worth it.

Spending a whole afternoon on sanding seems over the top. I've done quick sand jobs on pine before and the stain hid minor scratches just fine. Maybe Sam was using too coarse grit or didn't step down properly. Sometimes people make a big deal out of small things in woodworking.

Wait, really? I mean, sanding matters but a whole afternoon on one stool sounds extreme. I've rushed pine pieces before and the stain covered everything just fine. Maybe your buddy Sam is being too careful or his technique is off. Not every tiny scratch will show up if you use the right grit and move fast. It just feels like people blow this out of proportion sometimes, lol.
