Thought I needed fancy dot grid paper, used a cheap notebook for 3 months instead

I was convinced my layouts looked messy because I was using a $4 notebook from the grocery store. So I bought a $28 dotted journal with thick paper, and my spreads still looked the same. What actually helped was drawing a light pencil grid with a ruler first, then going over my lines in pen. Three months in, my grocery store notebook is almost full and it works great. Anyone else find that cheaper supplies forced you to plan your pages better?
