I was sure my grocery budget was untouchable until a broken freezer forced me to rethink everything.

My chest freezer in the garage quit last Tuesday, and after saving $300 on a replacement by buying a floor model, I'm now questioning every other 'fixed' cost in my budget - has anyone else had a major appliance failure lead to a bigger financial rethink?

That freezer pain is real, and henrybaker's story shows how these shocks can force a good rethink.

Watched my buddy's water heater blow and flood his basement last winter. That mess made him audit his whole house, swapping out old pipes before they could fail. He said the scare saved him more money in the long run than it cost.

Man, that's a tough break. So after you replaced the freezer, did you actually go through and change your other budgets, or did the feeling just make you nervous about what else could go wrong? I'm staring at my own water heater now.
