Stuck between a $12 hostel bunk in Lisbon and a $30 room outside the city, which would you pick?
I'm heading to Lisbon for 4 nights next month and my two choices are a 10-bed dorm near Rossio for $12 a night or a private room by the Oriente station for $30. The cheap one puts me right in the middle of everything but I keep picturing zero sleep with 9 other people, while the other saves money on paper but I'd be burning $3 a day on metro rides. Has anyone done the far-out room trick and did the commute really eat into your trip?
Did the far-out room thing in Barcelona and the metro ride was fine during the day but a real drag at night when you just want to fall into bed after walking all day. Lisbon's metro is cheap and quick though, Oriente to Rossio is maybe 10 minutes, so the $3 a day is not the issue, it's the last train timing and hauling your stuff around. A 10-bed dorm for 4 nights is a coin flip on sleep, one loud snorer and your whole trip is shot. In my experience a private room wins if you need rest to enjoy the days, just check the metro hours before you book.
