Said I lived locally to snag a cheap transit pass

In Berlin, I got a transit pass for locals by saying I lived there. It cut the cost in half (big savings), but I was always scared of a ticket check. Back home now, and it's stuck in my mind. Is this a smart travel tip or just plain wrong?

Would you do it again, knowing how stressed you felt? That worry (you know, the knot in your stomach every time you saw an inspector) really takes away from the savings. I did something like that once and the fine cost more than the pass, so it backfired. It's just not smart, and it feels plain wrong to cheat like that.

Ugh, I tried that same thing in Amsterdam last year. Telling myself it was just a clever hack helped at first, but I spent the whole trip looking over my shoulder. The trade-off between saving money and feeling anxious the entire time just did not work for me.

Feel that stress, did the same thing once. Totally get that nagging feeling after.
