PSA: My flight got canceled and I ended up saving $300 on a hotel...

It was a mess in Denver last week, but I found a last-minute deal on a hostel through an app called Hostelworld. Anyone know other good apps for finding cheap places when plans fall apart?

Yeah, Denver can be a nightmare for that. I got stuck in Chicago once and ended up using HotelTonight. Scored a room for half the price because it was so last minute. Sometimes those apps really come through when everything else is booked or crazy expensive. It's the only good part of a messed up travel day.

The real trick is checking those apps right after the hotel's normal check-in time passes. A lot of places would rather sell a room for cheap at 7pm than have it sit empty all night. I once got a fancy downtown suite in Seattle for less than a budget motel because I waited until 8pm to look. The hotels are just playing a different game with their own empty rooms.

My friend in Vegas swears by the 9pm refresh on the apps. He says the big strip hotels dump their unsold inventory then, and he's gotten rooms at the Bellagio for under a hundred bucks. It's a total gamble though, because sometimes everything just sells out and you're stuck. You really have to be okay with maybe sleeping in your car.
