Choosing between a hostel and a cheap hotel in Lisbon
I had to pick between a 25 euro a night hostel in the city center or a 60 euro hotel a 30 minute bus ride out. I went with the hostel and saved over 200 euros on a week's stay, which I used for day trips. Has anyone else found a city where the central hostels are a much better deal than the outer hotels?

See, I actually had the opposite happen in Barcelona last year. The cheap hostels right in the Gothic Quarter were packed and crazy loud, like party all night loud. I ended up grabbing a quiet little hotel a few metro stops out in Gracia for maybe 15 euros more a night. For me, getting real sleep and having my own bathroom was worth the short ride. Sometimes that extra bit of money buys you back your sanity.

But isn't the chaos kind of the point? If I'm going all the way to Barcelona, I want to be right in the middle of the noise and energy. Staying out in a quiet area feels like I'm missing the real city, even if I get more sleep. I'd rather be tired and in the heart of it than well rested and somewhere boring. That metro ride back and forth eats up time and just kills the vibe for me.
