A hostel manager in Lisbon told me my packing strategy was costing me money
He pointed out I was checking a bag on budget airlines for stuff I could easily buy there, like a big bottle of shampoo. I switched to a carry-on only rule and saved about 50 euros in fees on my next two trips. What's one piece of gear you decided to stop packing to save on baggage?

I used to pack a full size hair dryer for every trip. It took up half my suitcase and weighed a ton. I finally realized most hotels and Airbnbs have one, and my hair looks fine with whatever they provide. That was an easy win for saving space and avoiding checked bag fees.

Feel your pain on that one. I carried a giant curling iron for years before having the same lightbulb moment. It's so freeing to leave that dead weight at home.

That's smart, @spencermurphy, and it works for stuff like travel irons too.
