My sister said my cheap meals were just beans and rice, so I got creative.

She pointed out I was just cycling the same two things every week. Now I make a big pot of veggie soup on Sundays for under $10 total, using whatever's on sale. What's your favorite cheap meal that feels like more than just the basics?

My old roommate swore by a cheap lentil chili with cocoa powder. I thought it sounded weird until I tried it, and now it's a staple because that one ingredient changes the whole flavor game. It taught me that a single cheap spice or odd add-in can make a basic meal feel totally new.

Oh man, the cocoa powder trick is real... @nelson.gavin your roommate was onto something. I tried that once and thought I messed it up until the first bite. It's like magic. For my own boring soup problem, I literally just tossed in a spoonful of peanut butter last week because I was too lazy to go to the store. Figured I'd ruin it, but it actually made the broth creamy and weirdly good. Guess I'm the kind of cook who stumbles into accidental wins...

What do you put in your soup to keep it from getting boring week after week? I mean, I tried the same thing but got sick of it fast. My cheap go-to is just jazzing up ramen with a fried egg and some frozen spinach, but it still feels basic. Maybe it's just me but I need more ideas that actually change up the flavor.
