Debate with my husband over canned vs dry beans for chili night

Last Thursday I made a big pot of chili using dry beans I soaked overnight, which cost me about $1.50 for the whole batch. My husband argued it wasn't worth the extra time and mess, saying canned beans at $0.79 a can are simpler and just as good. I swear the dry beans had a better texture and less sodium, but he has a point about convenience. What do you all think, is saving that little bit of money worth the extra effort or are you on team canned?

Oh man, is there anything better than a good chili debate? I am totally on your side with the dry beans. I did the same thing last month for a big family dinner, soaked a pound of pinto beans overnight and they turned out so creamy and firm at the same time. Canned beans just mash into mush too fast in my experience. And yeah, the sodium difference is huge, my husband never notices it but I can always taste that salty brine from the can.

My buddy tried that canned bean shortcut once for his chili cookoff entry and ugh, they just turned into bean paste in the pot. He spent the whole party pointing at my bowl going "see, that's what dry beans do, that's the texture right there." It was kind of funny but also, yeah, the dry beans win every time.
