Unpopular opinion: thrift store finds beat fabric store sales most of the time
I was at Anime Expo in LA last June and saw two separate Star Lord cosplays. One guy spent like $80 on new fabric and patterns. The other girl found an old leather jacket at Goodwill for $12 and modified it. Her jacket actually looked more screen accurate. Now I'm stuck wondering if I should keep hitting up thrift stores or stick with sales at Joann. What's your take does hunting through racks of used clothes save enough cash to make up for the extra time? Has anyone else had better luck with one method over the other at a big con?

One guy spent like $80 on new fabric and patterns" - that's a lot but you can totally get fabric way cheaper at Joann if you wait for their 50% off sales, not just regular prices.

Got a buddy who tried sewing his own Halloween costume last year. He walked into a fabric store without waiting for any sale and dropped like $70 on a bunch of stuff he didn't even need. Ended up messing up the pattern twice and had to buy more. Ngl, I told him Joann runs those 50% off coupons all the time but he's too impatient to plan ahead. Honestly, that $80 story sounds about right for someone who doesn't know the tricks.
