Unpopular opinion: my $40 thrift store cosplay beat my $300 custom build at C2E2

I wore a rushed $40 Loki variant to C2E2 in March and got stopped for photos 12 times in two hours. Six months later I spent $300 and 40 hours on a fancy armored build and got maybe 4 compliments all weekend. The cheap one had a taped together scepter and a coat from Goodwill in Chicago that I dyed with $3 Rit. The pricey one had worbla and LED lights but it was so stiff I could barely move, let alone pose. Part of me thinks people respond more to a fun vibe than perfect detail. The other part thinks I just got lucky with the crowd that day. Has anyone else had a cheap build totally outshine an expensive one, or is this just me?
