Serious question, has anyone else had a friend question their entire approach?
My sister saw my half-finished Mandalorian armor made from foam floor mats and said 'you know, spending 40 hours to save $80 might not be the win you think it is.' It made me realize I sometimes value budget over my own time. How do you decide when a shortcut is worth the money?

Count the joy as part of the budget. Those 40 hours building something with your own hands gave you a skill and a story, which a store-bought costume never could. The money saved is just a bonus on top of the real project. Your time isn't wasted if you're doing something you love.

Disagree hard on this one. Joy doesn't pay the bills or give you those hours back. Calling 40 hours of work a "bonus" feels like a nice way to dress up a bad deal. Most of us have more things we need to do than free time to do them, so that time has a real cost. A store-bought costume frees you up for other stuff you might love just as much, without the sore back.
