I sprayed my $12 foam armor with plasti dip and watched it go from crumbly pool noodle to actual metal in 2 days
Two years back I built a Mandalorian chest piece out of those cheap blue foam mats from Harbor Freight, the $8 for a 4 pack kind. It looked like a yoga mat glued to a hoodie. My buddy Marcus watched me suit up for the local con in Dallas and just said "bro that looks like a camping pillow." So I did some digging and tried coating it. First coat of plasti dip, nothing. Second coat, still foamy. Third coat and suddenly the surface sealed up and the paint stopped soaking in like a sponge. The before and after was nuts, same piece, same shape, but the sealed one looked like hammered metal and the unsealed one looked like a bath mat. I had to wait about 10 minutes between coats and let it cure overnight, which was the hard part because I wanted to rush it. Total cost was like $12 for the spray plus the foam, way less than the $200 kits I was eyeing online. The key was thin coats, thick ones just ate the foam and left streaks. Anyone else notice a night and day change once they sealed their foam, or did you wreck a piece first like I did with my first helmet?
