Update: a foreman in Kansas City made us soak our trowels overnight and I've never gone back
Was on a 3 story school job back in 2011, and he said dry trowels were why our mortar kept setting up too fast in the heat. Swore it was nonsense for a week, then tried it and my joints came out cleaner with way less scraping. Anyone else have an old timer change one small habit that stuck with you?
I figured the whole soak your trowels thing was just old timer superstition too, right up until I tried it. Dry trowels pulling moisture out of the mortar actually makes sense once you see the difference in the joints.
