Old foreman's tip about wetting bricks saved my butt on a hot job

Back in 2011 on a commercial build outside Austin, a foreman named Ray told me to dunk every brick in water before laying on days over 95 degrees. I figured it was just old school nonsense and skipped it to save time. By noon the mortar was drying so fast it crumbled in my hand, and I had to bust out a whole section of wall I'd just put up. Ray walked over, said "told you so," and spent 20 minutes showing me the difference with a wet sponge. Anyone else had a shortcut that backfired worse than that?
