Buttered my mortar board instead of using a sponge and the joints came out cleaner
I was laying a garage wall in Fresno last month and the joints kept smearing because my sponge was too wet. A guy on the crew handed me a cheap butter pad and I dragged it along the head joints instead, and the mortar stopped running down the face. Has anyone else switched to a butter pad for smoothing, or do you just keep the sponge drier?

Hold up though, a butter pad isn't really doing the same job as a sponge. The sponge is for cleaning up the joints after you strike them, not for packing or smoothing the mortar itself. If your joints stopped running it's probably because you were dragging way less water onto the wall, not because the pad is some magic tool. A dry-ish sponge works the same way, you just ring it out better and keep a bucket of clean water handy so you're not smearing mud around. What you saw was really a water problem, not a tool problem.
