Skeptical about peat moss alternatives until my pH meter showed the truth

I've been mixing my own potting soil for years, always swore by peat moss despite the environmental gripes. Last spring in Portland I tried coco coir for a full batch of 40 tomato seedlings. My pH meter read 6.8 with the coir mix versus 5.2 with my usual peat, and the tomatoes grew twice as fast. Guess I was wrong about the old standby, but has anyone else found coir needs different fertilizer timing?
