Vent: the 50 page rule saved me from wasting weeks on dry nonfiction
I used to force myself to push past page 100 on every history book I picked up, and I would stall out on three or four at a time. Last month I started giving each one 50 pages to hook me, and if I am not into it by then I return it to the library in West Chester and grab something else. Cut my unfinished stack from 6 books down to 1 in about 3 weeks. Does anyone else use a page cutoff, or do you just know by the first chapter?

Fifty pages of suffering before you bail sounds like a hostage situation, not a reading habit.
