Vent: spent 4 years speed reading novels until I hit page 12 of Blood Meridian
I bragged to my buddy Dave in Cleveland that I knocked out 60 books a year, but then I hit page 12 of Blood Meridian and could not tell him one thing that happened. I was basically scanning words and hunting for plot instead of actually taking in the sentences, and the only reason I caught it is because I tried to explain the book to Dave and had nothing. How do you all slow your brain down after years of racing through pages?
Been there man. I did the same thing with Moby Dick, blew through it in a week and then my wife asked what it was about and I just stared at her. Total blank. You get in this mode where your eyes are moving but your brain is just waiting for something to happen. What helped me was reading out loud for a few pages a day, like actually hearing the words. Sounds dumb but it forces you to stop and sit with the sentences. Also try reading something way slower than you think you should. Like painfully slow at first.
