That doorstop of a fantasy epic I finally dropped after 400 pages

Picked up a highly recommended trilogy starter last month because everyone swore the payoff was worth it. Got to page 400 and realized I couldn't name a single character's motivation, just endless descriptions of castle hallways. Has anyone else stuck with a slog purely out of spite, or did you call it quits earlier?
