Gave a novel 57 pages and it pulled me in, so I finished it and hated it more
Everyone says give a book 50 pages then walk away if it's not working, so I did that with a 400 page mystery my sister lent me. At page 57 I was hooked enough to keep going, finished the whole thing in 5 days, and the ending was so bad I threw it across my living room. Lesson learned: the 50 page rule tells you if a book can hold you, not if it deserves you. Now I quit way earlier, usually around page 30, and I feel zero guilt. Anyone else finish something just because the start tricked you?
