Dropped $45 on a speed reading app and quit Ulysses even harder

I paid $45 for a speed reading app before starting Ulysses, thinking it would get me through the 265,000 words that crushed me at page 40. Instead the app just flashed words at me and made me hate the prose more, so I quit that too and felt like a sucker. Has anyone else bought a tool to fix their reading habit and had it backfire?
