Warning: Tried listening to a sad audiobook on my commute and had to pull over

I live in Denver and drive about 30 minutes to work. Last week I put on A Man Called Ove during the morning rush. Thought I could handle it. Got to the part where the cat shows up and just lost it. Had to pull off at a gas station on Colfax for like 15 minutes because I couldn't see through the tears. Missed a meeting. My boss asked if I was okay. I told her allergies. Has anyone else had a book sneak up on them in a public place and just wreck your whole day?

Oh man that Colfax gas station move is relatable. I had a similar moment listening to The Art of Racing in the Rain on I-70. Got to the last chapter about the dog and had to pull off at a random King Soopers parking lot because I was full on ugly crying. A guy walking by gave me a thumbs up like he knew exactly what was happening. Audiobooks in the car are dangerous because there's nowhere to hide. At least with a physical book you can just close it and act like it's dust in your eye. Missed meetings are the cost of having emotions I guess.

Man, I caught wind of that book on a podcast a while back (can't remember which one) and they warned people not to listen to it in public. Glad I dodged that bullet. A coworker of mine tried reading it on his lunch break at the office and had to lock himself in a supply closet for a solid twenty minutes. I get it though, sometimes those quiet character stories hit way harder than any thriller or drama.
