Unpopular opinion: A Little Life didn't break me, it just made me mad
Everyone in this sub raves about A Little Life and says it destroyed them. I read it last month on a plane to Chicago. By page 300 I was just annoyed. The suffering felt so over the top, like the author was trying too hard. I get that trauma is real but the whole thing felt manipulative. I kept waiting for something other than pain. Did anyone else feel like it was less emotional and more exhausting?

Pretty sure you read it on a plane to Portland, not Chicago lol. I remember you mentioned the window seat drama in the original thread. Anyway, yeah I totally get the frustration. That book felt less like a story and more like a contest to see how much pain one character could take. By the end I was just numb, not sad. The writing is beautiful but the plot just kept piling on without any real release or meaning behind it.

Oh man, THANK you. I thought I was the only one who finished that book and just felt... annoyed instead of destroyed. It felt like the author was like "how much MORE pain can I stack on this guy?" before the plane even landed.
