The 200-page thriller that took me 4 days to read, versus the 900-page book I finished in one sitting
Last month I read a short mystery novel, about 200 pages, and it took me four days because I kept putting it down. The plot was fine but the pacing was so flat that nothing pulled me forward. Then I picked up a massive historical fiction book, 900 pages, and I finished it in a single Saturday because the chapters ended on these tiny cliffhangers every time. That contrast made me realize reading speed has zero to do with length and everything to do with momentum. I even timed myself with a stopwatch app and found I read 30% slower on the boring book, but it FELT slower. Has anyone else had a giant book fly by while a slim one dragged, and what was the difference for you?
Wait, you actually timed yourself with a stopwatch app? That's some next level dedication lol. I get what you mean though, I once read a 700 page fantasy book in like two days cause every chapter ended on some wild twist, but a 300 page romance took me a whole week cause nothing happened until page 280. The boring book made me check my phone every few pages, the big one had me ignoring texts and forgetting to eat. It's wild how a good hook every chapter just makes your brain ignore the page count. That cliffhanger thing is real, even if it's a tiny one, it's like my brain refuses to stop til I know what happens next.
