Rereading a childhood favorite made me realize I'd missed the whole point for 20 years
I picked up The Giver again at 32 and suddenly saw that the 'community' wasn't the safe haven I remembered, it was a control system, which tipped me off that I'd been reading every dystopia since as a comfort story instead of a warning, so has anyone else gone back to an old book and felt embarrassed about what you took from it at 13?
