Spent $60 on a bone folder and it nearly ruined my first leather binding

Tbh I thought buying a cheap bone folder from a craft store would be fine for my first leather bound book. It cost like $12 and the edge was so rough it scratched my leather in three places before I even finished the cover. I dropped $60 on a proper polished one from a bookbinding supply shop and the difference is insane. Has anyone else been burned by cheap tools messing up expensive materials?

Bought a cheap set of awls once that bent on the third hole I punched. Had to toss them and buy proper ones after that. The thing is, cheap tools cost you more in the long run when you add up the ruined materials and the frustration. Sometimes you're better off renting or borrowing a good tool for a one-off project instead of buying garbage. But if you're gonna do this more than once, just bite the bullet and get the real thing.

Doesn't a proper burnisher cost less than that though?
